 RP Lessons

Okay, here is the place to brush up on your RP skills.

I'm going to write the RIGHT way to RP in Bold

and all the wrong ones in Italics
Lesson 1:

Keeping in Character

First of all, never write in 1st person.
Always RP in 3rd person.

I walked down the street, keeping my face down. The sound of the rain pounded in my ears. I wondered whether they were already there.

She walked down the street, her face turned down. The sound of the rain pounded in her ears.
'I wonder whether they are already there,' she wondered.

Or else you'd get mixed up with everyone saying 'I' and 'me' all the time.
Only use it when your character is thinking or speaking to others.

"I thought you were dead," I told him.

"I thought you were dead," she said.

OOC - This means Out of Character.

When you are using a character from a book/movie/etc, you must always be in character. Like

Voldemort skipped merrily, handing out flowers as he went.

No, that wouldn't do at all, now would it.

Voldemort cackled as he slid past his terrified Death Eaters.

If you have two characters be sure to say who you're playing.
Like:

(~Ron~)

Ron walked down the hallway, keeping his head bowed.

(!Harry!)

Harry sat beside her, taking her hand.

Either one will do, just mention between parenthesis (), or some other opening and closing tag, your character name.

I'm trying to find ways to do this with codes....

Lesson 2:

Writing Style

If you have not been RPying long, and you see a person's story or something, you might think "Hey, I like her way of writing. I'll copy her!"

Well, don't copy other people's writing style.
Always try your own.

If you imitate other's it might not come out well at all. People's writing style is different.

You may pick up tips and what else, but never copy them.

You might even be better!

Whew! That's a short lesson.

Lesson 3:

Grammar

Commas

When using commas, always think that it it a 'pause'. Not an excuse to make sentences longer.

She went down, pausing.

Try to write as if you're telling the story to someone.
If you're not sure what to write or how to write it, say it aloud. It might help.

" Speech marks "

When using speech marks, watch out for the letters and words that you might enclose in them that shouldn't be there.

"I think you should go, he" said.

Hey, it can happen.

And this is wrong:

"I told you to go and get her." she said.

Notice why?

This is the right way;

"I told you to go and get her," she said.

Put a comma after the last word, before the closing speech mark.

BUT, this is right:

"I told you to get her, didn't I?" she asked.

You wouldn't put a comma after the 'I', obviously.

This is also right:

"I thought I told you to get her." She turned away.

Only put the comma is you put 'said' or something like that after.

Spellings

Always spell check and re-read it. Twice.
Even the best RP people click the 'modify' button once or twice.

If you're not entirely sure, put it in Microsoft Word or make someone proof-read it.

If you make any mistakes, edit it at once. A few are okay, but try not to.

And if you do spellcheck it, always re-read it. spell-checkers aren't always write.

'You're' and 'your'

Remember those little words.

You're means you are.
Your means it belongs to you.

Chat speak

Never use chat speak like:

*How Not To Do It* OMG!!1!1 OMG LOL GINY EXCLAME3D IN SURPRIES I DID NOT EXP3CT 2 FIND U H3RA!!11!11!11111!1!!!111 OMG LOL SH3 SQU3AELD EMBRACNG HARMION3 IN A WARM HUG!!!1! OMG WTF LOL ((Courtesy of the chatspeak-translator.)) marauder

"Oh my gosh!" Ginny exclaimed in surprise, "I did NOT expect to find you here!!!" she squealed, embracing Hermione in a warm hug.

Lesson 4:

Whisper Tags

Now, as you can see there is a button with the UBBC that's labeled Whisper.

It allows you to post a message to a certain person. You must have their username.

(I disabled the changing of display name)

E.g.;

[ whisper = Username] Your message [ / whisper ]

Now, you write that without the spaces.
Only the person who you want it to see will be able to see it,

You can put multiple usernames.

This feature is here because some people might want to say something to some people in RPs, so you put them in whisper.

Please note that all admin can see your whispered messages so don't even try to break the rules.

Lesson 5:

Plot

All RPs must have some kind of plot. Make sure it goes with the story of your character.
If you're RPing with other people, discuss your plots in Whispers.

Don't crowd other people's threads. If it has a [close] sign on it, don't post in it.

When RPing with others, don't control their characters;

e.g.

[Alexandra]
Alexandra smiled, jumping on him and making him run around
.

See, you'd be controlling their actions.

And always post as much detail. If you're posting with other people, give them something to work on. Make yours posts at least 6-10 lines.
